Jim Jones Says “Harlem Shake” Was Originally His Song

jim jones
Baauer’s “Harlem Shake” has taken on a life of its own (ironically one that has nothing to do with the actual Harlem Shake), but according to Jim Jones, the monster record was originally his. In an interview with Jenny Boom Boom, the Harlem MC revealed that he was sitting on the beat for about a year and it was intended for DJ Pauly D’s upcoming album. The version Jimmy recently released was the original record. Who knows whether it would have had the same impact.
Well actually ["Harlem Shake"] was mine for a year, I had that record a year ago, it was supposed to be for Pauly D’s album and we never did nothing with it, so when I started to hear this “Harlem Shake” and I heard the beat, I’m like, “Damn, I had that beat already for a year,” so I just put the record out.

A$AP Rocky and Alexander Wang Share a Candid Chat for Interview Magazine

asap
ASAP Rocky recently landed another high profile fashion cover. After appearing on the cover of Vogue earlier this month, Interview Mag tapped the rapper to grace their latest issue. For the cover story, Rocky’s good friend and fashion designer Alexander Wang shared an in-depth conversation about both of their accomplishments in 2012, fashion, breakin stereotypes, collaborations and more. Back in January, Wang featured Rocky in his Spring 2013 promo video.
WANG: I know that you’ve talked before about wanting to “revolutionize” your generation. What do you mean by that—and what does it mean to you?
ROCKY: If I have an opportunity to say something positive, then I’m gonna take advantage of it, but there are two sides to that. It’d be politically correct for me to say something good for the kids when I have a chance—say something that’s positive—just because it’ll help my image. But I came up in a world that was just crazy—and it was hectic and kind of radical at the same time.
For me, growing up in Harlem and then migrating down to SoHo and the Lower East Side and chillin’ down there and making that my stomping ground . . . That was a big thing, because I’m from Harlem, and downtown is more artsy and also more open-minded….

So I got the best of both worlds. It was like being on the streets and then being in school at the same time, and I tried to keep my hands in everything just so I wasn’t missing out on any fun. I just always wanted to be knowledgeable of my whereabouts, my surroundings, and what was going on with our generation. So now that I’m here and I’ve got a microphone in my hand and about 6,000 people watching me, I need to tell them how I feel. For instance, one big issue in hip-hop is the gay thing. It’s 2013, and it’s a shame that, to this day, that topic still gets people all excited. It’s crazy. And it makes me upset that this topic even matters when it comes to hip-hop, because it makes it seem like everybody in hip-hop is small-minded or stupid—and that’s not the case. We’ve got people like Jay-Z. We’ve got people like Kanye. We’ve got people like me. We’re all prime examples of people who don’t think like that. I treat everybody equal, and so I want to be sure that my listeners and my followers do the same if they’re gonna represent me. And if I’m gonna represent them, then I also want to do it in a good way.
WANG: This past year has obviously been an incredible year for you too, in terms of your success and everything you’ve achieved. But at the same time, you’ve probably encountered a lot of difficulties and obstacles. How were you able to stay focused with everything that was going on?
ROCKY: Well, 2012 was probably the most historic year of my life. I got to work with you for the first time. I’m getting my respect as a video director. The fashion industry respects me and knows who I am. But then the album leaked. I also lost my dad over Christmas.
WANG: Wow.
ROCKY: But in 2013, I’ve already had a number-one album, and here I am on the cover of Interview talking to my good friend Alex Wang, so it looks like this year is going to be a good one.
WANG: When I first found out about you, I was so amazed and intrigued because there was so much genuine interest in fashion there. I remember when we first met, you came to the showroom, and you knew so much about me. It’s always nice to find that very authentic connection with someone who really knows what you’re talking about, even though they’re from a different world.
ROCKY: Well, I’m from New York—Upper Manhattan, Harlem—so fashion was a natural thing to me. It was just one of those things that helped me be an individual, because with fashion, you can stand out and you can make it your own. It’s like an art that you can make into your own. So for me, fashion was about standing out as an individual—and it helped me get the attention that most people try to get with publicity stunts or by doing other crazy things. But I just let the attention come to me naturally, and I think some of that has to do with my fashion.
—-
WANG: It’s a very positive message that you’re putting out there in your music and in breaking down those preconceptions that hip-hop gets stereotyped with a lot.
ROCKY: I also want people to see that I come from the ghetto—I come from the hood—and honestly, man, the mind-state there was kind of fucked up for a while. But now you see me—and other people like me—who are standing up and saying, “All right, the jig is up. It’s not a joke. These are actual people we’re talking about.” It’s same as with racism. There was a time when someone would get on a plane and request to move their seat just because the person sitting next to them was of a different ethnicity or religion or nationality. But I don’t think my generation wants that. That’s how it used to be. People are racist because parents and grandparents are embedding that kind of shit in their heads. But it’s 2013. Time goes on. We’ve moved past that. Everybody should be able to enjoy their life, because you only live once. So I just want to get it all out there and be the best role model that I can be, if people want to put me in that kind of predicament. I mean, I didn’t ask to be a role model, because I’m not perfect.
WANG: I wanted to ask you a musical question. You’ve been collaborating with a lot of great people lately. What makes you want to collaborate with someone?
ROCKY: The process of me collaborating with people like Skrillex and Florence [Welch] has been more organic than anything because I haven’t wanted to do anything that people expect me to do. I really want to do the unexpected, and I think that’s what I did when I executed Long.Live.A$AP. I wanted people to really see the message and that I’m an artist who not only has the capability of rapping, but of composing great music both for people of my generation and for people with different backgrounds. I wanted to appeal to people who’ve never really listened to hip-hop or really given it a chance before. I’ve also tried to incorporate all my favorite lifestyle things in the music. Of course, “Fashion Killa” is one of peoples’ favorites because it just expresses how much I like fashion. I had to give you that very rare Alexander Wang shout-out on that track . . .

A$AP Rocky Gets Harassed in Hilarious Alexander Wang Ad (Video)

After recruiting Azealia Banks for his Fall 2012 T campaign, fashion designer Alexander Wang has enlisted another of Harlem’s most famous faces, A$AP Rocky, for his new Spring 2013 T ad. The rapper gets his acting on (kind of) by shopping in a Wang store, only to be harassed by new employee, comedienne Bon Qui Qui. He isn’t her only victim, though. She also irks supermodel Alessandra Ambrosio, pregnant model Shannon Click and Barneys’ creative ambassador-at-large Simon Doonan.
A$AP Rocky also gets camera time in Noisey’s new web series, Noisey Raps. The premiere episode goes behind the scenes of Rocky’s recent Long Live A$AP tour, and features appearances from ScHoolboy Q, Danny Brown, Action Bronson, A-Trak, Flatbush Zombies and The Underachievers.

ASAP Mob Talks Kendrick Lamar’s “Control” Verse, State of NY Hip-Hop & Freestyles on ‘The Funk Flex Show’

asap-mob
A$AP Ferg’s Trap Lord debut album is officially in-stores and online today. Ferg and the A$AP Mob celebrated the release by taking over the Hot 97 airwaves on Monday night, catching up with Funkmaster Flex. A$AP Rocky, Ferg, Nast, Twelvy, and the rest of the crew got right to business as they gave their thoughts on Kendrick Lamar’s verse on Big Sean’s “Control.” Rocky explains to Flex that hip-hop needs a moment like this, and Kendrick along with the TDE crew are family.
Members of the Harlem clique mention Papoose, Joell Ortiz, Lupe Fiasco, and B.o.B as some of their favorite responses so far. In the 27-minute conversation they also discuss the current state of hip-hop, and the always regular topic of why New York-rap doesn’t get the support it once did. After their in-depth talk, A$AP Mob’s Rocky, Ferg, Nast, Twelvy, and Ant got back to lyrics with a 16-min freestyle over DJ Khaled’s “Grammmy Family” and Biggie’s “Who Shot Ya?.”

Justin Timberlake - SNL plus Stab at Kanye??

Justin Timberlake invaded 30 Rock as he hosted Saturday Night Live this weekend. The pop star called on a few legendary actors in the opening “Five-Timers Club” monologue, an exclusive membership that included past hosts and guests such as Alec Baldwin, Steve Martin, Tom Hanks, Candice Bergen, Paul Simon, Martin Short, Chevy Chase, and original cast member Dan Aykroyd.

Timberlake used the appearance to reprise old roles such as reuniting with his “Dick in a Box” partner Andy Samberg for the “It’s a Date” skit. Justin also played a court officer (“Maine Justice” skit), a porn star named Ricky V.I.Penis (“Moet & Chandon” skit), and a Roman emperor (“Caligula”). The much-talked about moment came in his “Veganville” skit, where J.T. appeared as a dancing/singing/rapping billboard alongside Bobby Moynihan of Sausage Depot. To promote healthy living, Justin did parodies of songs from Vanilla Ice (“Ice Ice Baby”), Rihanna (“We Found Love”), and Trinidad James (“All Gold Everything”), before throwing in his own version of Baauer’s “Harlem Shake.”

The multi-talented entertainer also hit the SNL stage performing his singles “Suit & Tie” with Jay-Z The shocking moment came when Timberlake put a spin on the song's second verse by changing "and aww sh** so sick, got a hit and picked up a habit" line to "My hits so sick got rappers acting dramatic" In response to Kanye West's recent rant in London. Also performed “Mirrors” backed by his band “JT and the Tennessee Kids.”

A$AP Rocky & RiFF RaFF: ‘Back & Forth’ (Part 1)

ASAP Rocky Riff Raff
As announced earlier this week, A$AP Rocky is holding down a regular spot for the second season of Noisey‘s hilarious Back & Forth series. And for the first show, the Harlem rapper sits down with the always colorful (literally and figuratively) RiFF RaFF. The two share a few of their favorite things, including women, lean and hairstyles. Rocky also says he used to question RiFF RaFF’s identity, but came to believe he was authentic. Guess he didn’t read that L.A. Weekly article.

Rihanna Gone Wild 2013: The Barbados Carnival Edition (photos)

Today is a mish mosh of various entertainment angles…there’s Drake’s OVO fest tonight in Toronto, there’s ASAP Ferg’s Trap Lord listening party in NYC, there are murmurings of an R.Kelly appearance up at the legendary EBC basketball tourney at Rucker Park in Harlem, Beyonce’s 4th night at Brooklyn’s Barclay…and many folks are still crawling back home after raging all weekend in Chicago at Lollapalooza. But it’s a strong bet that nobody….nobody is having as much fun as Rihanna, as she makes her annual rager through Barbados’ “Kadooment Day” carnival.
Rihanna shared a backseat pic of her iridescent rhinestone body appliques (above)…

Dipset’s ‘Diplomatic Immunity’ 10-Yr Anniversary Concert

Yesterday, true Dipset fans celebrated the 10-year anniversary of the group’s debut album, Diplomatic Immunity. After a decade of rap groups appearing and disappearing, Cam, Jim, Juelz and Freeky still hold their mark in hip-hop. Last night, the Harlem crew assembled at BB Kings in NYC to put on a special anniversary concert for the fans. Hosted by FunkmasterFlex and InFlexWeTrust, The Diplomats hit the stage around midnight and didn’t stop for nearly two hours. They bombarded the set together but also rocked solo sets throughout the night. Before it was all said and done, Waka Flocka and Lloyd Banks also made guest appearances to close out the night.

Bodega BAMZ - "SAY AMEN" Feat. A$AP Ferg (VIDEO)

bodega bamz asap ferg
Two of my favorite new MCs, Bodega Bamz and A$AP Ferg get spiritual in the video to their sinister “Say Amen” collaboration. Taking to the stand in a stunning cathedral, Ferg, aka the Trap Lord, preaches to the congregation, before the Spanish Harlem MC comes forward to repent of his sins. There’s plenty more religious topics to ponder on Bamz’s Strictly 4 My P.A.P.I.Z. mixtape, which you can grab here.

Kendrick Lamar Controlled Breakdown

kendrick_lamar_vibe_22939_copy.jpg
Kendrick Lamar is the best rapper in the world "right now". and this will be my last post about this…(maybe) unless something DRASTIC happens…anyway..
He proved it with his stellar verse on the song everyone’s been talking about this week: Big Sean’s “Control.”
On the song, K.Dot basically calls out every relevant rapper in the game. Since the song dropped, more than a dozen rappers have dropped their own response (interesting enough, none of the rappers Kendrick called out have responded.)
So who did respond? A bunch of D-listers. We went though the motions of listening to each response and ranking them.
Check them out below.
